to see if I could tell the difference between RGB and S-Video, I plugged the lead that normally connects my digital box to my TV to the AV1 (set to output RGB) output on my DVD player and left the S-Video connection. I then played through a few discs (Armageddon, A Bug's Life, Alien Resurrection and Blade)

S-Video out
The drawback, of course is that the picture quality is noticeably poorer than with the s-video connection. At this point I'm not sure what to blame for the problem - DVD player, TV, or cable. I've been poking around the web for a couple of hours and so far the only thing I've found that might be a clue is a

What is S-Video inpu˙˙˙˙˙
The S-Video connection keeps the all-important black and white (Y) information separate, and combines the colour difference signals into a single colour signal (C). Instead of three separate signals going to the display device, there are now two separate signals (Pb and Pr). As you would expect, combining the two

RGB or COMPONENT Which best ??
You can connect both video and audio directly to your TV, or you can feed audio only or both audio and video through your sound system's receiver. When hooking up a DVD player to a TV set, you'll get the best picture quality using the component-video connection, followed by the S-video connection.

SVHS
Switching back and forth between 480i or even an S-Video connection makes me realize how washed out the colors were before, almost like there was white being infused into the image. It wasn't bad when I didn't have a choice, I just turned the brightness and contrast down, but since I have a choice now,

The s-video connection, when loose, may cause exactly that, so if ideamarks is using an s-video feed, I would look exactly there. Things to check: 1.- MC end of the connection 2.- cable box end of the connection 3.- testing with a different cable Connecting a TV directly to the cable/satellite/feed box will help

S-Video out and PC connect mode together?0
I could not try yet whether a pure S-Video connection shows a usable picture, as none of the television sets in reach has this type of input. Q regarding S Video
On such systems, the TBC output will be Y/C, and in that case, by using the S-Video connection, you bypass two processing steps, (1) encoding Y/C back to composite, inside the LD machine, and (2) decoding composite back into Y/C (on it's way to becomming RGB) inside the TV/monitor. In this case, using an S-Video

S VIDEO VIEWING THROUGH MY TV
YES, buy one ASAP--nothing can touch it for video quality (except HD broadcast, which is actually significantly better in some cases). HOWEVER, everyone has been recommending using the S-Video connection here as well. This is NOT the best way. First, buy a "progressive scan" DVD player, and connect it to the other

S-Video What's with all the hype?
Performance: Review equipment consists of this unit (obviously) with a direct S-video connection to my 61" Sony XBR RPTV. Just as VHS can look pretty good on a 17" screen, those with smaller viewing monitors for their home theater may discern no differences whatsoever between LD and DVD.
